It was through her work as a teacher and counselor that Susan became interested in those areas of the law which focus on families, children with special needs, and educational issues, and in particular, the impact of divorce on families.

While working full-time as a counselor, Susan attended South Texas College of Law where she earned her Doctor of Jurisprudence Degree. Upon graduation she began her law career as an associate with the law firm of Sheri Y. Dean & Associates, with her primary area of practice in family law.

In 2005, Susan formed the Alston Law Firm, PLLC, where she continued to focus primarily in the area of family law until the merger of her firm in 2010 with that of law school friend and colleague, William Engelhaupt, to form ALSTON & ENGELHAUPT, PLLC, where Susan continues to focus on families in need.

Through her years of service as educator and counselor, Susan witnessed firsthand the trauma family law matters can inflict on children and their families. Susan brings this experience to the table in all family matters including but not limited to divorce, custody disputes, property issues, enforcement/contempt actions, paternity actions, child support issues, etc.

Susan brings a unique approach to the practice of family law by combining her counseling experience with her legal experience to assist clients in all areas of family law.
